FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Throughout my internship period for a total duration of 20 weeks, I learn from nothing to something as before joining the company I have zero working experience in travel related-industry. Now, I could able to design both inbound and outbound packages. Besides that, I could practically applied what I read from my textbook into the real working environment for instance booking for hotel rooms, issuing flight tickets, arrange for transportation, handling customer's phone calls and others. I am no longer waiting for spoon feeding by lecturer at polytechnic but require to stand on my on feet and be responsible for every action that I did as there won't be someone to point my mistake out.
To my surprise i found out that travel wholesaler earn less than travel agency as they have to follow the fix mark up percentage for each different categories of tourism, for instance accommodations, transportation, airlines, entrance ticket and the other related elements. After sending the rates to travel agency, they would then mark up again the price which means the price for a complete package that sell to customer are extremely higher than if they are planing to travel alone. In addition to that, I discover that SME's company are somehow struggling to stand out among the other competitors due to they have insufficient funds to hire new employees, provide training and development for them and to upgrade their basic facilities. For instance, computer that always need to restart,blackout and electrical shortage problem. As a result, talented and well-prepared workers may not be interested to join in compare to large enterprise and employer have no choice but to hire short term internship student to work with them. Besides that, I do observe that there is a loose relationship between employer and employees as there is only one permanent female staff working for the company and the rest of them are from the management level. Moreover, there is insufficient and disorder sample that could serve as a reference for new comers. Likewise, this company are unfamiliar as their business are set up within inconspicuous building.
In contrast, owner of SME's company are more freedom in making decision without involving groups and teams that require a more complex decision-making mechanisms. Furthermore, they could grab a niche market more easily compare to a large business company as they are close to the customer and capable to recognize and satisfy their needs.
In my opinion, I would like to propose some idea to the company itself. Firstly, the company have to build a systematic approach for training existence workers and to hire for new comers. These could in turn produce a high quality and productive staffs along with they would feel being appreciated. As a result, turnover rate and unwanted risk are likely to be decrease. Secondly, company need to adopt a formal standard hiring process in order to hire the most qualified staffs starting with devise a recruitment plan, write a job description, advertise the position, recruit the position, review applications, phone interview/initial screening, interviews, applicant assessment, background check, decision, reference check, job offer, hiring and lastly onboarding. Besides that, owner should express gratitude to their staffs who have contributed to the business's success or hitting the target via adopting financial and non-financial reward approaches. This may involve using small words of praise, dinner held for celebration of achievements, increase salary, bonus and others which relevance. More than that, company should provide basic security and healthy workplace for employees including setting up the monitor besides employee's desktop. The issue arise when screen for Closed-Circuit Television could only watch from the manager's office which expose workers to high-risk event such as theft and rape.
